Driving While Black

Driving while black (DWB) traffic stops are a common occurrence in the Canada. DWB refers to black drivers being followed and pulled over by police officers because of their race, colour or ethnicity.

Courts and Human Rights Tribunals confirm that police engage in racial profiling and it is illegal to do so. In Canada, you have the freedom to go about your business without unwarranted police interference and the right to be treated equally before the law, without regard to your race, colour, ethnicity, age or other grounds.

Please contact us if a police officer does one or more of the following and you believe it is because of your race, colour or ethnicity:

  • A police officer sees you walking, stops you and starts to question you
  • A police officer sees you and decides to follow you on the road or highway
  • A police officer pulls you over despite the fact that you were following all traffic laws
  • After pulling you over, the police officer ask you inappropriate questions or makes inappropriate comments
  • After pulling you over, the police officer asks you for your license and registration and then lets you go or or issues you a ticket or warning

Do not argue with the police officer. After you are told that you can leave, contact Olalere Law Office and we will let you know how we can help you exercise your legal rights.
